Acoustic
research is a large subject. Violin makers are now using machines and
software that were unavailable in previous times to analyze instruments
as we carve them. To a lot of makers, the computer has become as much
of an indispensable tool as the finger plane or the chisel. Acoustic software
is a valuable tool, but I always keep in mind the fact that the violin
makers of the past made their legendary works without the aid of these
fascinating tools.
